I placed mine 18" from the wall and 12" apart both vertically and horizontally. This keeps them from pooping on the wall or each other. Chickens often face different ways on the roost.
I also like to use gently rounded 2x4s flat side up for adult chickens, as it keeps their toes covered and our coop gets below freezing in the winter. Sometimes I use 2x2s when they're younger and smaller.
