stupid question... How can you tell the big end from the small end?

I have a sportmans incubator. It had 3 trays but I removed the bottom one so I can put the eggs there for lockwon. On the 2 trays I have left I lay my eggs down. It has an automatic turner. I've been trying to figure out how to increase my hatching rate and I thought putting the eggs in egg trays would help. But, with some eggs I can't tell which is the small end and which is the big end...

I might not be getting this, but I don't know how you would lay the eggs down and then use the automatic turner. Are you thinking you will turn them by hand? If you have a Sportsman, why would you want to do this?

If I am missing the point, here, I apologize.

Ok, maybe you are trying to use trays so you can use the automatic turner and increase your hatch rate, but cannot find the pointy end of the egg. I totally understand if this is your question, because some eggs look the same on both ends to me, also. The poster who said to candle them and look for the air sac is exactly right. I had to do that with several of my eggs this last hatch.

Seems weird, doesn't it? Like it should be obvious which end is which, but it isn't.

The big end is usually a little darker than the pointy end. I have the same problem -- several of my hens lay symmetrical eggs. I learned the dark end thing somewhere in the bowels of this forum...
