Well this morning for breakfast I cracked the 2 beautiful big eggs my barred rocks laid last week. And they both had double yolks. And were delicious.

So the stupid questions are:

1. Is this common with barred rocks?
2. what would happen if these had been fertile and developed into chicks?

It's all yours, you opened the thread... I seek enlightenment!

The large egg layers sometimes pop out a double yolker, but it's not on a regular basis. Double yolkers usually don't hatch, but on a RARE, RARE, RARE occasion do & you'll get deformed chicks.

i got a couple double yolkers when my first flock started laying, and i think they all came from my Cinnamon Queen. none from my Barred Rock though

So far the all regular sized eggs from my Cuckoo Marans have been double yolkers they just started a week ago and with all the heat some of them are on the every other day schedule...

Double yolks are pretty common when pullets first start laying, but get less frequent as they work the "kinks" out of their system. I have a bunch of different breeds and haven't noticed it being more likely in any one breed. As far as incubating them while I've seen the very occasional success story I think it's one of those things that falls into the --Just because you can doesn't mean that you should catagory. Most often it ends badly with at least one chick and more often both of them not making it. What is really sad is that they often develop fully, but due the the crowding in the egg and no hard surface to push on (just the other chick instead of the shell) it's quite common for them to die while trying to hatch.
