Stupid question... what do you use geese for?

Lawn care, alarm clock, guarding, entertainment

, eggs, companionship, to annoy my annoying neighbors

, to muddy up my pond, to clean out the lettuce from the garden, to sit with me in the yard and watch the chickens, to chase my dog. I could go on and on but mostly because I love them!

I only have 1 and he lives with ducks and chickens and dogs, but he is so funny and mean too, but mostly I like to know he's out there watching over everyone. He's a great companion for all of us.

I have mine for the sheer enjoyment of having them and watching them graze and grace my 9 acres. I love watching them wander around, play, eat, swim, rest and preen. I dread the day I'll have to leave my acreage and find new homes for them. I love them dearly.

Please get at least two or three. One goose would be lonely and that would be sad - esp. if you can avoid having only one. I can highly recommend Tufted Romans, Buffs - Tufted or not - and Sebastopols. Mine are very docile - never agressive and on the quiet side. My oldest geese are 4-5 years old and the youngest are about 4 months young. Lovely creatures - all 24 of them!

There are a lot of "goose haters" in my area -- its now very suburban, and we have over 1,000 lakes in the county. So, as you imagine, its prime real estate for both humans and wild Canada geese. People are indignant because they plant these massive lawns, water, mow, and fertilize, creating prime conditions for geese to thrive, and then when this is what happens, the geese have the audacity to come into their yards and poo in the grass.

The guy across from me, who is a jerk anyway, used to spend a lot of time chasing them out of his yard. He has since given up, because the numbers of geese here pretty much guarantee its a losing battle.

And, of course, the fact that I've been known to throw cracked corn out there right across the street from him to attract them ... hmmm, would I do that???

I was given two geese to rehome because "we had chickens" and their owners were moving and didn't want them and thought we would take them - we did. (Brown Chinese gander and Embden female from two separate owners and who bonded and mated once they got to know each other) They are not aggressive towards us but nervous of us as they didn't grow up here - but at least I know they are enjoying life in our fenced yard and pond.

When I was growing up my grandmother always had a goose and a turkey at holiday time as we were from a big family and I LOVED the goose. They are expensive when you can find them in the supermarket so thought I'd raise them and with having Pilgrims and knowing male from female I could put a couple of extra males in the freezer every year. Well the jokes on me!!!! I have grown to love them - especially the 4 Pilgrims I bought as 2 week old goslings and the 2 crossbreeds that I hatched from eggs that I can't even THINK of eating them. Maybe I'll get a mean one down the line somewhere, haha Either that or ante up the money and buy a frozen one from the supermarket.
