I KNEW something was eating our eggs because I hadn't gotten an egg from our OEGB hen in over 3 weeks and she normally lays every other day! Well, I told my husband I'd figured it was a snake getting in there, smal enough to go through chicken wire, big enough to eat a small egg, but not big enough to eat a small chicken. Sure enough, the next day, I go out there around 11:30-12:00 (I'm usually not outside during this time) and there is a 2.5-3 foot rat snake right outside the Leghorn pin by their nest box (which is ground level) (the Leghorns btw are right next to the OEGB pin). I picked it up and took it way out in the front pasture in the group of trees. When I later told my hubby, he said it would just come right back. I felt so stupid! I should have taken it WAY down the road in the woods somewhere. This was about 3 days ago, and well, it's come back. OH! I forgot to mention that Pinky (OEGB hen) laid an egg THIRTY MINUTES after I caught the snake!! He kew exactly when she was going to lay!! Well, anyway, I shoulda gotten another egg from her yesterday but I didn't, and not only that, but I only got TWO eggs (big ones) from my Leghorns when it shoulda been 4-5 and I only got two big ones again today! And no Pinky eggs. Oh, and one of the eggs was rolled way out of the nest box.

I am furious!!!! I am going to be on snake watch tomorrow!! From about 9 am to noon. I'm going to catch that booger and drive him 10 miles away so he can't come back!

Oh gosh, I don't want to kill the poor thing. He's just doing what he's supposed to do! He doesn't know they're MY eggs, he's just hungry.

Put a plastic egg filled with sand in the nest box. The snake will swallow and slow it down enough to get it. If you "relocate" it is going to be someone else's problem and if you don't move it far enough, it will be back for your eggs and any chicks he can get. Good luck.

I like snakes and do not like dispatching one either but as I stated, "If" there is no other option, the glass egg does work. Whatever you decide, I wish you luck.
