I KNEW something was eating our eggs because I hadn't gotten an egg from our OEGB hen in over 3 weeks and she normally lays every other day! Well, I told my husband I'd figured it was a snake getting in there, smal enough to go through chicken wire, big enough to eat a small egg, but not big enough to eat a small chicken. Sure enough, the next day, I go out there around 11:30-12:00 (I'm usually not outside during this time) and there is a 2.5-3 foot rat snake right outside the Leghorn pin by their nest box (which is ground level) (the Leghorns btw are right next to the OEGB pin). I picked it up and took it way out in the front pasture in the group of trees. When I later told my hubby, he said it would just come right back. I felt so stupid! I should have taken it WAY down the road in the woods somewhere. This was about 3 days ago, and well, it's come back. OH! I forgot to mention that Pinky (OEGB hen) laid an egg THIRTY MINUTES after I caught the snake!! He kew exactly when she was going to lay!! Well, anyway, I shoulda gotten another egg from her yesterday but I didn't, and not only that, but I only got TWO eggs (big ones) from my Leghorns when it shoulda been 4-5 and I only got two big ones again today! And no Pinky eggs. Oh, and one of the eggs was rolled way out of the nest box.
I am furious!!!! I am going to be on snake watch tomorrow!! From about 9 am to noon. I'm going to catch that booger and drive him 10 miles away so he can't come back!
