I was getting rid of a box of styrofoam packing peanuts today, when the box broke and they blew all over the yard in the 20 mile an hour wind. The chickens went crazy and started chasing and eating them. In a panic I tried to grab them from the chickens and pick the packing peanuts up as they blew around. It must of been funny to see a fat, middle aged man running around the yard doubled over chasing chickens and about 1000 packing peanuts.

Will it hurt the chickens that they ate them?

My 5 week old chicks got a hold of a piece of styrofoam that was falling apart due to sun damage.

No harm to them... just interesting looking poo for the next couple of days after.

It won't hurt them. My stupid thud butts ate part of the insulation cover pon the outdoor faucet.

But oh my... my cheeks are hurting from laughing at your misfortune!

Chickens are voracious styrofoam eaters. I made the ridiculous mistake once of thinking the styrofoam inserts that protected my son's laptop in shipping were JUST RIGHT to elevate one of the waterers. LOL They ate the whole thing!!!! And they all survived just fine!!!

My peacocks will eat styrofoam anytime they get the chance. Unfortunately it hasn't affected them at all.

Styrofoam Coolers. It also makes a great house for little chicks that have moved out of the brooder into the yard. Just cut a whole in the rim and turn it upside down. then place a brick on top. Wala a house.

I wonder what it IS about styrfoam that makes it so irresistable to chickens? We insulated with pink foam that had a tough outer layer on it. They left it alone wherever that layer was intact, but any place the cut surfaces showed they did everything they could to get to it. They even figured out that one of those cut surfaces would be exposed when I opened the door to clean the coop (the cut was normally protected by the door) and they would get into the coop as I was cleaning it and lean out and under for any bit of it they could reach.

Check out the "CHICKEN TREAT" list. The administrator writes "I gave up on my girls knowing what is good for them when I caught them eating out of a bag of styrofoam peanuts". : )
