styrofoam packing peanuts debacle

It sounds funny...

I dont know why they love stryfoam. Maybe because it is so yielding and satisfying to peck at it.

But it wont hurt them, normally.

Thanks for posting that question. My EE hens and RIR roo just tore into a piece of styrofoam & I didn't know if it would hurt them. What a relief. I just lost my favorite Silkie pullet and could not bear to lose anyone else.

Mine dug under their house just to get to the styrofoam that I sprayed along the foundation. I keep burying it and they keep digging it up. Between that and two that are eating wood chips from their coop floor its amazing they live at all.

I met a pheasant/peafowl/turkey breeder a few weeks ago who PURPOSEFULLY puts styrofoam in with his small chicks. He says it cuts down on their pecking at one another.

Before I knew how much chickens go crazy for styrofoam, mine ate some. I worried and worried but they were fine. That said, I am not at all convinced it's an okay thing, so I make sure none is around anymore.

Someone once said that the styrofoam eggs in craft stores come from chickens that ate styrofoam.
