styrofoam? problems?

For my class we will be incubating chicken eggs, but we have an older, styrofoam incubator, that looks a lot like the pic. If its made of styrofoam and old, can that cause problems in the incubation? are there any specific things i will need to pay attention to? I really want this batch to go well!! I have had so many bad experiences with these incubaors!!

I use 6 of these, along with other types. It's a pretty easy process, and I have an incubator how-to on my BYC page.

Howdy and THANKS for sharing this wonderful experience with others! That incubator, in the picture is the Hova-Bator and it is the top model in stytobators! What you will need to do is FIRST make sure it works.

I just got a new one in last week, and I set it up, adjusted temps, and made sure it worked properly. Does yours have a fan? Do you have a reliable thermometer? Do you have a hygrometer?

Once you verified everything works, temps are proper, humidity is good, then you are ready. When you set it up in class, I would do the set-up the day before you set your eggs. That away you can make any adjustments to the bater in the classroom enviorment. Another question, do you know if the school runs its' enviormental controlls 24/7? The reason is that it might run good during the time school is in session, but on nights and weekends, if they turn the temps down on the heater, it could have a temp drop. The simple solution for this is just to bring an heater to warm the room while school is out of session.

The Hova bator is designed to raise the ambient temp to incubating temps. But too much of a temp fall, and the temps in the bator will fall.
