Hello BYC!
Thanks to the great advice here, I decided to give my broody Silkie a couple of chicks to adopt and it has thus far been a success. I thought some of you may be interested to see the results.
I used the method from another BYC user(s) of slipping the chicks under the broody at night after letting them chirp loudly just outside the coop. It has been four days so far and my Silkie has been an outstanding momma so far. She is segregated with her chicks in double-wide nesting box but I plan to enlarge their segregated area soon to give them more space (and to give the other hens back their nesting boxes).
Today I noticed her picking out food and holding it in her beak for each of the chicks to come and take. It’s been amazing watching her take care of and communicate with her babies.
