I am new to posting here but I would like to share with everyone about my ongoing incubation. In the past, I had a low hatch percentage rate and didn't know why. I am using one of those Little Giant incubators with an automatic egg turner. This incubator came with a little cheap thermometer and I used it assuming it was correct. I gave up incubating for a couple years and thought I would give it another try.
This time, I went to Farm and Fleet and got an actual wireless weather station and I put the receiver in the incubator which measures both temperature and humidity. I found out that where I had the temperature previous was only 95 degrees but the old thermometer said it was 100. I can have the display sitting upstairs in the living room and monitor the temp and humidity in the incubator in the basement.
At day 18, I removed the eggs from the turner and added more water to get the humidity up to about 60-65%. Day 19 is when pipping started and day 20 and 21 they were popping out like popcorn! I made one discovery with the temp and humidity sensor. I was sitting upstairs last night and saw the humidity starting to rise and went down to check things out and saw another chick had hatched. So I now know that when my humidity rises on the display, I have more chicks hatching. The humidity usually rises about 5% when another egg hatches.
It's kind of cool to make a discovery like this purely by accident. Hopefully this can help anyone else who had a low hatch rate like I did. I can't wait to get more eggs and start over again! Have a good day everyone!
