Sudden chicken death

I will!  I am almost wondering if the pullet's symptoms match Coccidosis.  They are all 14-15 weeks old and I would think they would have developed an immunity by now but it is possible she was just genetically weaker.  The symptoms seem to match her, lethargic, puffed up appearance.  We have had a couple periods of massive rain (2+ inches in a day) that could have caused the bacteria to thrive.  The other babies seem healthy, but maybe I should treat them all.

Do you have an idea if their poop is bloody or mucousy?

If you treat one I would treat them all!!!

I have to say, i have been googling Coccidosis and found this picture of a pullet that had it. Pretty much IDENTICAL to my pullet.

It makes me feel terrible that it was preventable, but at least I know how to treat the others now. And I am pretty sure it is totally unrelated to my cockerel now.

isolate the sick bird away from the healthy birds. observe the others if they kinda getting isolated or alone most of the time they're sick.

you bird might have newcastle disease. any visitors dropped by recently? chances are if this is the 1st time it might be mechanical or airborn.

mechanical means that it has been carried by visitors or any animal that wandered in your birds' area.

airborne means carried by birds or animal or any farm that has a sick bird within your vicinity or farms that just got their birds vaccinated and it so happened that your birds are not vaccinated.

Thanks! I have isolated the sickies and all of the others were running around like lunatics playing and sparring this morning. I am worried about how fast it came on with the pullet though, hope I don't come home to more of that before I can get them treated! I have not had any visitors since January but I live out in the country and you never know what others have in their flocks.

I did clean the coop Sunday (day before she got sick) and that particular pullet was in the coop when I cleaned and the others left until I was done. I guess it is possible I stirred something up in the shavings. Hmmm, hadn't thought about that.

i know its hard that these things happening but if in case it spreads like wildfire, cull them. its gonna be an uphill battle and will cost you a lot. cover the land with good lime and grow grasses in it. dont put any bird for 4-5 months. these birds could pick up bacteria from previous birds that was raised on your land before. if you see any blood on chickens' poop its infectious including the flies who land on the poop and transmit this sickness.
