I am mystified and deeply saddened that my nearly two year old female Pekin duck, who I hand raised from a duckling, has suddenly died. She was being cared for by someone who cares for my two ducks when I am away, and although he says she ate and seemed absolutely fine the night before, she was dead in a sleeping position the following morning. Does anyone have any notion of why a duck would suddenly die like this? My male is calling for her or otherwise absolutely quiet for hours on end. Can one duck who has lost his mate live a reasonably happy life alone or should I try to find a replacement for her? I am checking the rescue groups and animal shelters but fear that neither he nor I will bond with just any female duck. Any thoughts anyone can share from your experiences?
