I'm reading through the article, thank you so much. A friend of mine with an urban farm says that she crunches up egg shells and feeds them to the chickens instead of oyster shell. We've been doing the same. What are your thoughts on egg shells as a calcium source?

Egg shells are a good source .... I feed them after they are roasted at 275 to kill any pathogens that could be transmitted to the hens....
Also, hens need oyster shell ... egg shells get absorbed too fast due to their thinness.... Oyster shells are larger chunks and get absorbed slowly.... I fed both...
And Granite Grit is also a necessity...
Anyway, that's what I read from a reputable source...
