How disheartening! So sorry for your loss.

I once lost about 14 birds to what I think was a weasel, in one night. It got into the coop and wiped out a bunch, including my best dark Cornish broody hen. We found where it got in, and fixed the spot, and set a trap out, but it never came back. In about 15 years of raising chickens, that only happened once. Raccoons, and foxes, an occasional dog, only once with the weasel.

But only if they are 'Coon dogs.... they give a musical bellow and a chase, and soon the end is near with a good shot. All others, well...

My younger Lab/BC mix must have a little quiet coonhound in him.....no bellow, no chase...just one squall of a coon, one bark of the dog and one dead coon on my back porch the next morning. One pleased chicken owner and one big sigh of relief that I can sleep at night without coon predation...or any other, for that matter.

He's an egg-suckin' hound, but I sure do love that dog! He has earned his eggs many times over...

Our dogs too. They have stopped 3 cats and a hawk and I think they are paying off one of my chickens to not eating the oyster shells so the egg shells are paper thin. The dogs love those.

Yup, my dogs, too. If they didn't eat it first.

I figure there are too many dogs that are all bark and not much bite.
