I kind of had this in a different post. but something new

Gabby my 3-4 month old Rouen male duck. Started spurts of flying, it started just in the pen, fly and in and out of the pool. Then the other day while I was sitting with them, he just flew over the fence (just about 2 feet high)
I put him back in, and he's been in since.. (the was the other day)

today I came home, I hear Zeke give her Quack, however she knows I am coming I don't know. all the other quack quack, or whisper whisper for the boys they all looked excited. And there goes Gabby, flew right over the fence which Hazel thought was good fun and did it too (she is one of my chickens)

So I had to once again go do a small chase to get them back in.

Why is he suddenly doing this? he hasn't done it while I am not around.

Thanks

My rouens flew over the house, one day they just vanished... I wonder, could they be Mallards? Or did flying somehow get back in their genes?
You could probably clip one of their wings, that might stop it.

Wow really?? Well considering I was told he was a runner, or a khaki Campbell when I go him, he turned out to be a rouen.. so who knows

Thanks

OH and another thing is to stop them from having a running start. I had a lot of obstacles and such so they really didn't have room to take off, that helped some when my Runners would take off and fly out of the pen.
My obstacles were just strategically placed bowls of water and some dog houses.

What types of Rouens do you have? Expedition? Utility (I think that's what they are)?

And I have a heap of mature muscovies they tend to fly around and out of there habitat every now and then. It doesn't bother me that much but I guess I don't have coyotes and stuff around that could get them.

Take a video of him flying. He sounds like a really happy duck. My ducks all flap like that in the morning - jump - hop - fly as much as they can in their run.
I have Muscovies and trimmed one wing of each. They can still fly, but short distances. You can clip a wing if you are worried.
Here is a video of one of my girls flying in the a.m. Even with a clipped wing they could potentially clear a fence. Also, if rouen, your boy will get too heavy to fly much.

I am unsure what type of rouen I have.. didn't know there were different ones.
good idea not letting him get a running start, I will try that.

Soon2b that is exactly what Gabby does.

Wow!! That was very burd of her.

These are the three types of Rouens:
Expedition (I’m most familiar with)

Utility (Don’t even think exist in Australia)

Rouen Clair (Different variation of Expedition)

I think you have the utility Rouen as it seems to be very common in the US. I’ve always been confused because Rouens aren’t the most common here, although I know a person who has some expedition Rouens who shows them.
