Hi - my buffs free-range from sunrise to sunset. I was outside off and on all day, nothing unusual going on. Left tonight for a bit and when i came home and killed the engine I could hear all the way from the driveway my younger buff wheezing and whistling from her perch. Very sudden onset - I heard nothing unusual in her breathing at any time today, or this evening when she went in for the night. She fed as per usual throughout the day and this evening. She gave absolutely no indication that anything was wrong until she settled in to sleep tonight. Any advice on first steps/treatment?

Does her crop feel really firm? Does she have bubbles or anything in her eyes? I would say she might be hot, but when chickens are hot they don’t normally make sound.

Thanks for giving me ideas on things to check...crop feels fine; eyes are clear. I'm confused bc again this morning like yesterday I'm not hearing anything. She's not in any distress or showing signs of it when out in the yard and moving about. I have in the past seen what you are referring to when they're hot - beaks open and quiet panting when they are trying to cool off - and you are right that's always been quiet. This thing only at night with the loud whistling has me confused. I'll keep an eye - was hoping that if it was an onset of something I could be proactive in treating. Maybe she's just snoring...😴😂

I've had Easter Eggers honk loudly when it has been real hot. This might be the case with your hen. Another possibility is that she gorged feed or water and it couldve went down her trachea. IF that's the case, not much can be done about it.
You can bring her inside your house in the a/c and give it time to cool her down, also cool water with ice in it and watch and see if the whistling stops.

Thank you. So far everything is normal as she's out and about today; curious if it'll happen again when she's at rest tonight. If it IS the heat we're in trouble...this is barely the beginning of it here in south Louisiana. Good reminder about ice...

How is she? I’m searching threads as my silkie sounded odd yesterday and still today. She’s eating, drinking and walking normal. It’s been very hot here and tomorrow is supposed to be worse, talking 104+
