My mom found one of our EE pullets dead on the coop floor this morning. She reports that all the hens were screeching and she had heard a thump earlier this morning. We just got back from a vacation last night, and they all seemed fine then. They all had a feather picking problem, but thats been going on for a while. I do not know which pullet it is yet so I don't know the specific info on her. I will post again after this with more information. I would just like to know anyones ideas on what could've happened and how I can prevent it from happening again. Thank you!

would defo need more inside info on the bird and behaviour of your flock and how she looked laying their in death

from there a vauge picture can be made

Okay so I haven't been able to examine the body yet (sorry!) but I have determined that the dead bird was Britney and that was what puzzled me. Britney would not let me pick her up like most of the EE pullets and had no real problems. She had no serious problem with feather picking and she seemed to be relatively high in the pecking order.

I will be able to examine the body later and give more info. Until then... Here are some pics from a few months ago.

It could be a serious case of Red Mite, it makes the perfect fit, the most unpleasant way to find out that you have it is to find a dead hen/rooster in your coop. And Red Mite causes excessive feather loss.... What you need to do is scrub down the entire coop with hot soapy water, burn the current bedding, and give your birds a serious dust bath. Don't panic! It can be treated!

Here is what you can do if you do have Red Mite, it's not my video, but I find it very useful.

Hope This Helps!

I don't know if they have Red Mite because they constantly bite each other and rip out the feathers. I will look up the Red Mites though. Thank you so much! Are there any signs that I could find on the birds or the body?

It could have been egg yolk peritonitis. Thats what happened to my girl. Fine one day, dead the next day. No signs of illness that I noticed. So sorry for your loss....
