Suddenly Sick Chickens

Hello,

I have three lovely chickens named Salt (Lakenvelder), Pepper (Ameraucana), and Paprika(New Hampshire Red). All three 7 month old hens. At 1:30 yesterday afternoon all three were healthy happy chickens when put in their chicken pen. When I returned at 4:00 Paprika was at the back of the cage dead and the other chickens were unusually quiet.

I live in Texas so it has been hot (102) but yesterday was no worse than the rest of the summer. The coop is mainly open mesh wire and sits in the shade. They had a full water and feeder when I left but they had knocked over their water and it was dry when I came home. I refilled it immediately but no one drank.

After I buried Paprika, I noticed Salt was acting lethargic and her breathing seemed labored. I brought her inside to cool off but she continued to pant and have wet almost water like diarrhea. She would not eat or drink anything. As the evening progressed, she started to drink some sugar water and her diarrhea was more a light brown/pale green and finally a solid-ish dark poop. She continued to drink lots of water but did not eat.

This morning, she was standing up but still moving slow. She is eating and drinking but I can tell she is not herself. I also noticed some small lumps on her wattles. Otherwise she has no lesions, no nasal discharge or swelling in the face. She did sneeze a few times. I let her go outside again and that perked her up but she sits and rests frequently. My other hen Pepper seems completely normal but stays close to Salt now that her buddy Paprika is gone.

Does anyone know what may have caused the sudden death and illness? What do I do to help Salt who is still sick?
I have never had a sick chicken so any help is appreciated. Thank you.

instead of sugar water, try some gatorade, or buy some avian electrolites/vitamin mix, it will help with dehydration and the hot weather.

i am not sure what's wrong with them

That is a good idea. I have some gatorade mix I will try. She is more interested in food and water but still has pale wattles and comb. Maybe the added vitamins will perk her up. Thank you.

She sounds dehydrated or possibly suffering from heat stroke. Her electrolytes may be off balance. A few years back I was working in 100 degree weather drinking lots of water, and i thought it was OK, but after a few hours I became very sick. It turns out all the water I drake flushed my system of the important things I needed to survive. I was not retaining the water I was ingesting because if my electrolyte imbalance. For humans too, salt is needed to keep water in our system, but i dont think you can give chickens salt.

It would be ironic if a chicken named Salt just needed a bit more salt in her diet. I offered her some sports drink with electrolytes that should help with dehydration. She has not been interested in it yet but is pecking at bugs between rests.

Try making a mash from her food, add in the electrolytes wo dampen it and make that her only food offering. Dampened food is a favorite with my birds, sick or not.

I'll try that. She is being a bit stand-off-ish at the moment and not accepting anything I put out. Not an entirely bad thing as that is more her usual attitude.

Pepper really likes the mash and Salt ate a bit too. She is resting again but she might eat more later. Thanks for the suggestion.

I wanted to thank everyone for their advice and good wishes. Salt (center black and white) is looking better. She did some active foraging and ate her cottage cheese treat with gusto. She still takes frequent rests but seems to be improving. Pepper (on the right) enjoyed the treats too and has been a good companion. Thanks again.
