Just to share something that I am discovering, now that my chickies are scratching around in their run every day.

You would be amazed at the junk they dig up! Every day I make a pass through their 'yard', and pick up at least a small handful of pieces of wire, pieces of plastic, pieces of string, even a piece of blue glass, some screws, cigarette butts, etc.

I think part of this problem is because we haven't lived here long, so we don't really know the history of that piece of ground. There used to be a really old overgrown grape vine there, which we removed.

Just wanted other newbies like me to be aware of this, so maybe you can keep your chickens from eating something bad too. A chicken running around with a cigarette butt in its mouth is quite a sight though!

(I did catch and remove!)

oh that you'd gotten a photo if the chick with the butt in his mouth! that would have been hilarious!

very good idea!

Hello everyone, I am new to poultry and new to this site. I cannot tell you how impressed I am with everyone on line here. I am getting four hens and one roo this evening. My question: Do I keep them in the pen for two weeks until they get to know their "roost" before allowing them to free range?
