We have 10 older hens who are on layer and have their own coop, but they have food available outside the coop on the ground in the run also. Now these 10 hens share an ENORMOUS run with 30+ teen chicks varying in age from 10 to 18 weeks (or so). They have alot of chick starter outside in the run that the older hens also eat. These teen chicks also share a coop with some 5-8 week old chicks. When the teen chicks go outside the coop, the babies get freedom in the coop until evening when they go back to the brooder and the teens go inside the coop. Kind of a complicated system, but it works for us.

But the older teens are going to be laying soon, so do I just add layer to the outside food and hope they choose the right one to eat?

And is it okay for the older hens to eating the chick starter???? In 3 months or so, ALL of them will be on layer, so it won't matter, just wondering how to make the transition.
