Suggestions on a breed that lays well and can tolerate hot weather.

Unfortunately, overzealous anti-cockfighting laws could be read to prohibit American Game Birds in this area.

It seems it's always extremes in this country

Wow that does seem extreme. I didn't realize OK was so far left. Have they outlawed owning pit bulls also?

This is untrue. There is no state with laws prohibiting the keeping of Games in this country. If there were we would not be able to have poultry shows as Games are one of the largest number shown. The Shawnee, OK Show is a great show and quite large; with plenty of Games.

Another breed to consider would be Cubalayas. They tolerate the heat extremely well.

I am referring to a municipal statute not a state statute and I don't think pit bulls are illegal but they have discussed it and they did making breeding dogs illegal without a special license.

Also thanks for the advice on a heat tolerant birds I am finding all the info I can on each of those listed.

Edit: I found the Code: 5-1-108 A. No person shall keep, nor shall any permit be issued for any gamecocks, fighting cocks or swine except miniature pigs

As mentioned, Dominiques, Cubalayas, Games and Turkens are all supposed to be heat tolerant breeds. I'd also like to mention Egyptian Fayoumis are heat tolerant, disease resistant and very good foragers. Sandhill sells them.

I think the Cubalayas lay smallish eggs. .. . so research egg size before making your final choice!

Mediterranean breeds need to be bred in the area before they are aclimated. I have some leghorn hatchery stock and they did not handle our 100 degree heat last summer very well. They panted and panted so bad that I started dipping them in buckets of water in the morning so that they would stay cooler threw the day. If you decide to go mediterranean - - - - find someone in your area who has had them for several generations and they have gotten aclimated to the HEAT!

Municipal codes are a different story altogether; however, I would think it could be challenged thru the city council by educating them concerning poultry shows with Shawnee as an example.

If you wanted to do a rare breed with a historic link to America I would suggest White faced Black Spanish which other than Games are the first (non-game) breed that were introduced to the Americas.

If you go with Leghorns or Minorcas I would suggest getting them from a breeder like Don Schrider (Leghorns anyway).
