Sulfadimethoxine powder question?

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

What information do you need for the Sulfadimethoxine? Dosage is 1/2-1 teaspoon per gallon of water depending on how severe the issue you are treating is. It is used for 5 to 7 days only. The egg and meat withdrawal is 5 days.

Enjoy your two new hens! I hope they always bring you great joy.

Welcome to our flock!

The information I needed was could I still use these little guys for eggs. After calling the company they told me I could never use any of these chickens for layers even the babies! I was so upset! Also my first hen to come down with symptoms now has a new symptom she is limping on one leg. Hoping these guys are going to pull through and I can still use there eggs!

Lots of these medications say to never use on laying hens. The reason for this is there has never been any studies done on hens using these particular meds. Sulfadimethoxine is a common antibiotic to use on chickens and as long as you wait out the egg withdrawal, you will be fine. Eventually all drugs break down in the body and are no longer present. So no need to worry, I can assure you!!

All of us here have used this and other antibiotics on our chickens and all is well.

However if you are having other issues with your hens right now, such as this limping hen, you might post a question in our Emergency section and maybe someone can help you with this issue....https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures

Was she limping before you got her? If not, make sure your roost bars are not too high. Heavy breeds shouldn't jump down from farther than 18 or so inches. As heavy as they are, they can pull tendons or sprain their hips as they come down hard.

Good luck and I hope all turns out well! :)

Thank you so much for all the information! You have made me feel so much better! I'm so happy I joined this forum! Everyone seems to be stable and maybe improving a bit, they are on day two of treatment. One little chick is still struggling, but everyone else is holding there own. Limp is better today so maybe she just strained it. My roost ladder is very low and I will keep it that way thanks for the advice. I am treating the sneezing, congestion, and diarrhea with meds. I will let you all know the outcome, and truly thanks again! I really love my birds so much already and was so upset things started out like this!

Sulfa drugs are very powerful and destroy all the good bacteria in the crop and intestines as well. So when you are done with treatment, get them on some probiotics. These will help to pump up the good bacteria as well as the immune system. 70% of the immune system is in the intestinal tract. So a healthy tract is a healthy bird.

Oh and make sure to change and make a new batch of the Sulfa each day and also with the probiotics. (you can use human probiotics as well)

Good luck and I hope they make a complete recovery!
