Sulmtalers Thread

Pics
Just joined this forum while searching out information on this breed. There's a lot of knowledgeable people here. I purchased a pair of Sulmtaler at a local swap last year and couldn't be happier with them. The rooster, his name is Elvis, is very calm, protective and nice to all the girls. The only time he has been aggressive toward us was when his mate was broody nesting and I got too close. We had two chicks from them hatch out shortly after Easter and I hope to post photos of them here soon.

Meanwhile, here's some photos of the proud parents, Elvis & Priscilla

Does anyone here raise the Sulmtalers as a meat breed? We were going to get a few just for fun and to experiment but not sure when to send extras to freezer camp. Do you wait and process them the same time as any Dual Purpose breed?

Normally around 16 to 20 weeks

Tomorrow is the big day! I know this breed thread is not (super) active, but I plan on giving it a bit of a resurrection!

We received a pair of 12-week old birds (the ones previously mentioned from RBA) , as well as six day-old GFF chicks of the "Gold Duckwing" variety, I'm anxious to see how they grow and develop.

A question regarding the Sulmtalers, I can't find them in my APA book, do they have an American standard? I have found online versions of the UK standard, but not American.

Thanks!

Sulmtalers AND Alsteirers are beautiful birds. I so-o-o love the crests! They happen to be too large a breed for my small backyard flock of bantams and lightweight breeds but it doesn't keep me from drooling over pretty birds! I believe you are right that they are not APA birds yet but there may be some Sulmtaler and/or Alsteirer clubs/forums/facebook/etc online to get these breeds recognized.

I'll have to research those clubs!

We received the 8 babies today! The day olds from greenfire are ADORABLE. Very vocal and active. The 12-week olds from RBA are from greenfire stock, and I'm definitely seeing potential in the hen, she has a great full crest and tail, the roo, on the other hand.... time will tell.
