I have a 3 1/2 month old Sumatra that is supposed to be the roo, if he was sexed correctly, but I am having my doubts. He is smallest of the flock, including a Fayoumi hen. At what age should I unequivocally be able to tell he is a rooster? He is not exhibiting any rooster-like behavior thus far.

The experts sexing chicks get it 94% correct at best. Sex-links are excluded. So you may have a pullet instead of a cockerel.. Most peeps want hens and are slightly disappointed when they accidentally get a roo. At about 6 or 7 months hens will start to lay. Roosters will start to crow. some roos start crowing earlier. I am not very familiar with Sumatras, so the time frame is general to chickens.

Post a pic and we should be able to help. Size of the bird and behavior aren't the only indicators of gender. Comb/wattle development, saddle/hackle feather development, etc are all clues

do you have an older rooster in the flock?

X2 on the above. Trying to ID a bird without a pic is a bit like shooting in the dark. If you can get a pic posted, we'd be happy to take a look at your bird.)
