Hi, everyone! I'm new here, and new to raising chickens. My family has been kicking around the idea of fixing an old coop which is partially on our property, but owned by our neighbors, who once owned our home. When they lived here, they built the coop thinking it was on their property. After re-surveying the lot, and purchasing the land behind us, they realized the coop, and barn that they also built was now on their new property. We're great friends, practically family now, and they told us to use both buildings however we want, since they have their own buildings with the new house way in the back. We treat the property as our own, cutting grass, etc.
Well, this summer, the old coop will be revived. It is a good sized building @ approx. 8' x 16'. The roof is rotted and moss covered, and the floor is rotted through under the hole-y roof. I have a few before pictures here, and hope to update as things progress. I'm just waiting for our young family of Carolina Wrens to vacate before we start! They built a nest in the wall next to the light switch! After completion, we hope to get our flock started in the spring of next year.

I would sure appreciate any ideas that anyone might have on building, and equipping this coop. Thanks, John

We are in Northeastern Ohio, and weather has been great this spring, except for a quick frost 2 weeks ago. The summers are typically in the mid 70's to 80's, with lows in the 50's and 60's. The winters can get pretty cold, and snowy. I plan to run electric to the coop for a light, and heater. The walls will be sheathed in osb, and I'm debating on insulation. The roof will be re- sheathed, papered, and shingled.

It should be a fun challenge, as I am not a very handy guy, but I'm willing to push myself, and try about anything! I have a buddy that is going to help me with alot of the hard parts. I too am glad to have such a great relationship with my neighbors, we're truly blessed!

p.s. the wrens fledged as of yesterday, so the adventure is about to begin!
