Do chickens need direct sun light all day, or do they just need the light of the sun? In other words, for the first part of the day, they have direct sun light. In the second half the sun is behind the trees. Will this effect their laying?

In one word, No. As long as they get sun light, whether it be direct, or shaded, the will still lay. In fact, if it was direct all the time, you would probably have problems from them over heating, dehydration, and stress, so It's good that they have shade =)

I put the coop and run in the shade. Heat in summer is a great problem for chickens. The sun does not shine into my coop.

For light, it seems that the sun shining is sufficient. Mine forage most all day every day.
