We grow sunflowers every summer in our garden, but we usually just leave them out for the wild birds to enjoy once it's ready. Would it be safe to hang the flower in the run for the girls? Or are there parts of the plant that are poisonous?

I'm sure its safe. I don't believe there is anything toxic in sunflowers. The deer won't let me grow them any more, they eat all parts including flowers of those that escape that long.

It is much more fun to watch them peck the seeds out of the whole flower than to take them out yourself.
I love throwing in whole sunflowers. The best is melons - they go nuts and just leave a paper thin rind.
