Hi, my husband and I have a small mixed flock that we consider pets with benefits. We have enjoyed every step of the process from building the coop and run to brooding little cuties, to watching them grow into the adult versions of their fluffy little selves.
My parents and uncles raised meaties, but we decided against that and instead followed in my grandmothers footsteps with just a few hens roaming the yard hunting bugs,eating weeds and providing hours of entertainment watching their antics. Having fresh eggs is a real bonus that we really did not figure into the equation when we first got our chicks, but one that we love. They are so yummy and we love to share them with friends and famly.
We only wanted hens at first, but hearing our neighbors rooster crow was kind of nostalgic and we decided we would like one for flock protection and maybe a few little chicks if one of our girls decided to go broody. It was almost like fate that we no sooner decided we wanted a rooster, then our friend mentioned he had one he desperately needed to get rid of. It tuned out to be a cute little 10 week old cockrel who adopted us as quickly as we did him, so now our family is now complete.
I am so happy I found this website. There is so much great information here. I can't wait to get busy trying to absorb it all.
