My grandparents are house sitting for people with a flock of chickens. A new rooster was introduced by the owners and he is extremely brutal and mean. He attempts to kill all the hens on a daily basis. My grandma (gently) kicked him away from attempting to kill a healthy hen by pecking her on the head, neck, and eyes. He has hurt 3 hens so badly they bleed and stop walking, eating, and drinking. He pecks their feet so they can't run away and cuts them off from the water and food to weaken them then ambushes them in the roost. 2 hens have been taken away to recover and another might need to go too. What do we do? This roo is not eliminating sick chickens, like some roosters do, but is picking on every hen the same way. Please Help!!!!!

If he was just introduced it's likely that they aren't submitting to him.

How old is he? What breed? How old are the hens and how many?

Personally I wouldn't keep a rooster that's purposefully injuring my hens. This behavior could be passed on. Was he quarantined before addition?

Were these hens used to a rooster?
Was he introduced in the look but don't touch method so they could get to know each other?

I am not sure, since y grandparents are just renting. As far as I know the rooster is much younger than the hens, the girls being several years old and the roo being maybe a year. He is pretty young, but full size. I think he is a Black Copper Maran, but not exactly sure. I don't think they have had a rooster with them before. I think he was just plopped into the flock, no introduction. There are 7 or so hens.
Thanks so much for your concern, Cassie

If the cockerel is bloodying the other birds he needs to be isolated immediately.
Hopefully there is somewhere to confine him away from the other birds.
Are your GP's house sitting or renting where this bird is?
