Supportive Hens?

Okay, I've seen it all now. My hens, bless their little hearts, are really funny. When one is getting ready to lay an egg, four or five of them gather around the nest box. One or more will actually lie down next to the egg layer. The others will press up against the egg layer and put nesting materials around her.

Have you seen this? Is this common? It's very cute.
 
Aren't they just the sweetest little things? I have been doing a lot of reading here about that kind of behavior so I guess it must be common. Still it's pretty amazing when you think about it.
 
Aww, so sweet! I've noticed that my girls call back and forth to each other- the one who is in the box laying "checks in" with the ladies outside the coop, as if she wants to be sure they're still nearby. The ladies who are outside will occasionally "holler" up the chicken ramp and wait for a reply. Too funny!
