suppose I should intro myself :)

WELCOME!!

I love the pics, they are beautiful. I think you are right, the second photo looks like a cockerel. The comb is wrong for a BLRW, must be a mix.

Thanks, all! Interesting comment about the BLRW's comb, Rocky Rhodes. You're the 2nd person to comment about the comb looking a bit off. I am humbly open to learning from all of you... please tell me what a BLRW's comb typically looks like! :) Also, any other sure-fire indicators that this one is a roo? I was thinking that the larger and redder comb/wattle (as compared to the other chicks), and the fact that it's the one that most often "chest bumps/challenges" the others (sometimes with a peck from its beak)...had me initially thinking it was possibly a cockerel. Bit of a bummer since I like this one's personality, but can't keep backyard roosters where I live.

Got a little ahead of meself and posted my first official post in the "what gender is it" area before making nice over here in the "intro" area,  :)  Brand new to chickens by about 6 weeks, but already smitten with the 5 babies I bought. Live in So. Cal, and besides the chicks I also have the pleasure of raising my 10 year old daughter, and even older German Shepherd, and a super cool rabbit. We moved the chicks from the brooder into the coop full-time about a week ago, and they are all happy campers. Based on some reading I did here, I installed some very low wattage LED lights in the hen house thinking that would draw them in at dusk - and the first night I found them all in the house before the solar even kicked on...such smarties.

We have a plucky & friendly Barred Rock (she's been the flock leader from day one; she always jumps in my lap when I sit in the coop), an inquisitive yet aloof Rhode Island White (always the 1st to investigate something new), a feisty but friendly Blue Laced Red Wyandotte (which, darn, I'm now pretty certain is a roo/see other thread), a shy & wary Welsummer (she's getting less so, but she's definitely lowest in the pecking order as well), and a sweetly vocal Light Brahma (she's always singing some little song, no matter what she's doing).

Thanks for all the great info here at the board.  It's truly been a help to me in getting started.  Cheers!
welcome to BYC!
