Supposedly same breed, same age, but one has floofy butt and the other doesn't?

Hey,

I don't know if there is anything to this. Maybe I missed something in chick raising 101 or something, but I find this odd and I'm wondering if it means anything- like one is a roo or one is a pullet or maybe something is wrong with their growth rate. I don't know but I thought I'd post about it here.

I bought two Blue (splash, probably) Andalusian chicks over Easter weekend. I think they are supposed to be pullets, but I forgot to ask really. I just assumed they were since mostly at this feed store they sell pullets. Anyway, one is a bit bigger than the other in size. The smaller one though, however, has wing and tail feathers coming in, while the bigger one does not yet. I also noticed that the bigger one has a big round bottom- floofy if you will- and the other has a bottom that comes more to a point.

I took some photos of them a while ago, and while these don't show exactly what I'm talking about, they do show the different structure. Is this just the way some grow?

Anyway, chick #1 with floofy-ness and hardly and wing feathers and no tail feathers yet




and chick #2 with 'petite' build, long wing feathers already and, you can't see it but tail feathers started with an 'unrounded' bottom.



I'm a bit worried that chick #1 is a boy because when i first received them I did a feather sexing check and that one seemed to have more characteristics of a male.

Anyone know anything about this? Or is it just that chicks grow at different rates, even if they are the same breed. They really look different except the color that it started to bother me, hence writing here about it. Chick #2 reminds me more of what a Blue Andalusian chick should look like, but I've only ever raised one before- and its a rooster.

What say you, byc? I'm curious to know if anyone else noticed something like this with their chicks.

They're both splash
Blues are more blue, even at hatch (if that makes sense). And yes, chicks of the same breed and sex can grow at different rates. Feather sexing also doesn't work on most breeds, usually just the ones that mature quickly (like Leghorns, I believe). I've never raised Andies, so I'm not sure if they're considered a fast maturing production breed.
I would start by calling the feed store and asking if they came from a pullet or straight run bin. That being said, vent sexing is only 90% accurate. But knowing if they're straight run will probably set your mind at ease...
