Supreme Emu Got More Emus!!

The farmhouse is low-tech by choice, but I think I can get some photos onto BYC -- I certainly have enough willing emu subjects.

I wanted to hatch an emu. Almost had DH convinced on the idea. Then he saw the size of emu eggs at a craft fair last weekend.....
No sayin' WeGotEmus for me!

Supreme Emu,
What are the temperature extremes these guys normally live under? I wouldn't mind a few if they aren't going to need mollycoddling. Would they have a problem with mile high elevation? dak

Hi, Dak. The first thing to note is that I'll be passing on to you a good deal that I have gleaned from El Interneto. For example, I've seen a couple of maps of the areas in Oz that emus inhabit – it's most everywhere.

So, now I get to sound like some sort of tourist bureau: Oz has enormous amounts of snow (winter only) on the mainland – it's just 'tucked away' on the top of a mountain range that we don't use. The highest mountain in this range is 7,000 feet. Emus live, at least, on the periphery of these. Moreover, emus lived in Tasmania. Check the map. Tasmania is purty darn cold in winter – not Canada, but snow in plenty of places.

We think it's pretty cold here in the Gully – but that's by Oz standards. Technically, we're temperate. I've been amazed to see my emus sitting complacently on the ground, undercarriages tucked up, scratchin' their arses with their beaks, in pouring mid-winter rain.

Conversely, emus live in some purty darn hot environments.

Thank you Supreme Emu, I find it very tempting to try to hatch a few of those lovely eggs, and I don't want a high maintenance species. We are considered high desert. It can get -20's in the winter and 100+ in the summer, with very little humidity.

There is a large breeder in my state who offers hatching eggs starting this month.
