Surgery to stop crowing

Hi there,

I am not sure of the exact term in english.. but is it possible to devocalize a rooster? I can talk to my vet but I thought you guys probably had more experience than my vet, in this regards. I am not sure it is very current for them to do this procedure, where I live anyway. I don't think it is possible because of the physionomy of the bird..

I kept a rooster last year and in spring when he was crowing at 4 AM and I had to keep the ventilation opened in the coop, I thought it would disturb the neighbours. So this year I'd like to see if I could possibly devocalize the one I have now!

It is possible, if your vet will do it. It's costly depending on your locale, here not so much because we have a big university animal hospital that does things like that reasonably inexpensive for students to learn with. That kind of option is up to you, but it might save a buck versus local vet.

I think the last I heard was it costs around $200... I couldn't do it, DH would kill me lol... But I need mine to crow, too

Caponizing is another option, but it will ruin him for breeding (its neutering)

No crow collars... I've heard good, but I've also heard if roosters being strangled with them, so that I would use EXTREME caution with.

Thanks for the info. We do have this kind of university also, I even studied there!! Never thought about them for this. It's true they must be seeking for farm animals to practice, they are harder to find around here then cats and dogs. I'll ask around.

I didn't want to caponize as he is a meat bird and I liked the idea of keeping his chicks for meat.

Is it crazy that I would consider paying 200$ to keep that bird? LOL He was injured in an attack in my chicken run and I cared for him about 14 days. I can't get around to killing him! But I'd also save on chick fees from every time I buy the babies..
