My DH surprised us yesterday with new chicks! He saw them posted on Criag's list. They are supposed to be Ameraucana chicks---but, we'll have to wait and see.

I was hoping to get some eggs for my DD to hatch out, but we have our hands full with these lil' fuzzy butts!!

Here's my question----these guys "play possum" when you hold them on their backs---is this normal? Other chicks we have had would just look at you and fuss a lil bit. These lil ones close their eyes and pretend to be asleep. It is kinda cute. DD just loves them.

The sleeping on the back thing is a defense mechanism because of predatory birds. Maybe it has to do with human hatched compared to hen hatched?! The coloring is adorable on them! Like chipmunks with masks!

the sleeping thing is that you are hypnotizing them, when on theire backs in the right possition you can get them yo fall asleep or go into a relaxed state. Ask PC he has perfected it

Mine are susposed to ship today so I should get them tomorrow or Wednesday. Everytime I get new chicks it's like Christmas time all over again.

Thanks for the congrats!! We are really enjoying our chicks. I don't know why I pay for cable when I have free entertainment watching our chicks

We do have a chick that seems like a loner. She is eating well, running around and pooping. But, she like to be in the corner by herself. I decided to name her Blossom. But, that's only if it is a she.

Another of our newbies is really bossy. She tries to keep the other chicks away from the feed. My DD gives her a gentle nudge out of the way!

Wish there was a way to sex the chicks by personality?!!

I can tell from the picture that your DD is enjoying her brood.

I had one like that. A pretty Silver Wyandotte. She got so assertive at about a month, I had to make another brooder for her. When the other five went outside in their coop, I could only put her in an hour a day then her aggressiveness would accelerate. I slowly increased her integrated time and now she is with her sisters full time.

Don't give up. To think that I was ready to cull her, and now she is a beautiful pullet!

Have fun with the cuties!
