This morning I checked on my chickens and wondered why there were a bunch of little black birds in with them. Once I got closer, I realized they were chicks! My Hamburg hen that disappeared 3 weeks ago returned to the chicken yard with her 10 teeny chicks in tow. I thought about separating them from the rest of my chickens (12 hens, 3 roosters, 25 pullets) but Mama has been doing such a good job of protecting her chicks that I left them alone. She showed them the water, she drops food on the ground for them, and she attacks any chicken that ventures too close to her precious brood. I am wondering what she will do tonight - at this point I figure she is doing so well I will let her figure it out. There is shelter in the yard if she chooses not to go in the coop with the rest of the chickens.
Just thought I would share with you folks - not everyone appreciates this as much as you likely do.
