Surprise hatch

Thank you all so much! I tried to corral her but it's so thickly woody and weedy I'm afraid I will lose a chick or two -- when I grabbed the mom the chicks did not follow. So I let her go again. I'm going to sleep outside by her tonight (yes, I am insane) because night is falling. Pictures to come! It's really interesting -- I have a mix of all kinds of birds but all of hers are gray and black, so maybe they are all her eggs. Dunno. Thanks for all the support.

Be careful! I keep a shovel or a broom with me when I'm sitting with my babies to swat at hawks/coons/whatever. Of course, at night, I'd bring something with a little more power.

Lovely story and I DO hope that your babies had a safe night.

I would try to catch them up today if you can (just so YOU can get some rest!).

I have a hen who has only appeared at the coop to sleep twice in ten days and is sleeping out in the undergrowth. She appears for a shortish while first thing in the morning and takes some of the goat and the cat's breakfast, then disappears again, only to be seen again the following morning. I would love to think that she will appear with chicks, BUT she is a crusty old Warren (brown hybrid) who has only been laying about one egg a week for some months.I am still going to keep my fingers crossed.

Anyway, great story and DO post some pics.

Rozzie,

It would be lovely for the old girl. The chicks would be mutts and I seem to specialise in rooster breeding(!) so lots of boys to try to re-home, yet still I would love it for her, for me, too. It would be the best swan (or should that be chook?) song.
