surprise in the coop

For rattlesnake avoidance training for dogs: http://www.patrickcallaghan.com/

It
worked great on my two big dogs. They went two years in a row and won't even go near a shed skin in the yard. The terrier...wasn't so effective!!!

I'm editing this because I just read that Patrick Callaghan died last year. I didn't know that.

I'm so glad you and your chicken are ok. We get water mocs here and the occasional copperhead but so far no rattlers. Also the usual garden, grass and rat snakes. I like the nonvenomous snakes but I'm hoping not to find the others. I like them but DH will kill most snakes on sight.

I had a rattlesnake in my rabbit pen once; if my rabbit hadn't been btwn me and the snake, I would have been in big trouble! Every one survived...well, except the snake.

I live near you, Salmon falls near cool, And I know rattlers are around all over here, just haven't seen them yet! I will definately be cautious once my girls start laying, Porbably not let my kids collect the eggs, or at least not when they can't see them! I'm betting the snake was happy he found a warm spot!

But I would have done the same and disposed of him, not good when kids are around! Glad you didn't get bit! Did you feed the rest of him to your chickens?

chickenwhispherer, Garden Valley is between Auburn and Placerville. Any rattler I see in the wild I side step if the snake lets me. Any snake I see in an area that children may be biten, meets its maker.

Yowzers!!! What a close call for you and your hen. Thank goodness all went well. And a good lesson learned too.

We have allot of snakes here during the warmer months (copper heads, rattlers, rat snakes, etc. - over abundance of them) and I am terrified of snakes. I usually see a hint of one and scream my head off, run in the house, grab the gun and start shooting or if there is a shovel near by it's , "off with it's head". Super scary. I love nature but a snake is one creature that frightens me.

i'v talked to people who have done backpacking around california and apparently if you aren't careful rattlers will crawl into your sleeping bag for warmth. I'm guessing thats what it was doing under the hen.
