I had three chicks hatch on Day 20 and another 8 hatch on Day 21 (Saturday). Two had to be helped from their shell and are now wearing fancy moleskin shoes to straighten out their toes. Another chick hatched on its own but has problems with its legs and feet. It's now wearing snazzy moleskin shoes as well, which has helped, but still has problems with the right leg at an odd angle.

This morning as I got ready to pitched the unhatched eggs, I noticed that one of them was empty. I looked through the glass and saw a newly hatched chick in the corner. I checked the other eggs and noticed that another had pipped. It's nearly completely zipped now. I'm watching it like a hawk to see if I'll need to intervene. I didn't help one of the chicks Saturday night and when I woke up Sunday, it was dead in its shell.

I guess I'll just keep the bator going now until Day 24 or 25 just in case there are other surprises in store. I set 36 eggs and 27 made it to lockdown. Of those 12 have hatched so far, one was dead in the shell and the one still pipping.

I kept track of where each egg was inside the incubator so I know I have warm and cold spots in the incubator. That'll be important info for my next hatch.

Surviving two lockdowns for the same set of eggs is enough to make my gray hair fall out entirely.
