Surprising my wife with chickens in Seattle

Quote:
Silkies do fine in seattle. However, anything with feathered feet and crested heads = muddy feet and heads. If your coop is downtown seattle sized, do try and keep all birds of the same size and crests. In smaller coop and run situations, crested birds can often not see good enough to get out of the way of uncrested types. I free range so crested silkies are not an issue with my standards.

Welcome!

And that is an awesome present!

@Monkeyminions Silkies do just fine here. There is a specialty breeder close to me (I am a wee bit north of you) she has beautiful silkies. There are silkies to be had at the farm store as well, but if you were able to get one from her you'd have something special.

Anyway, monkey, if you should decide you want to try cuckoo Marans, I have some. Two of three are laying, and they aren't tickling my fancy. I'm too fussy. Keep in mind should your wife want eggs now. I primarily keep rare breeds only and I usually have something to share.

Congratulations on your coop and congratulations on becoming one of the "enlightened" Seattleites! BTW, did you know Seattle has its very own "chicken coop tour" in the spring? If you look now, you might be able to take your wife on another "special date".

from MN!

What a wonderful gift! I am sure she will love it. I know I would... but don't think I could handle anymore birds right now, I have lost track of how many I actually have.

@KlaHaYa Gardens
Thanks for the tip! (I'm actually a bit North of Seattle, in Bothell)
I just looked around for that Coop Tour, and it looks like I just missed it! :-(
