Hello fellow chicken-lovers. Because egg-laying is influenced by many factors including climate and hatch date, I'd love to take a survey, compile our varied experiences, and post the results. If you want to contribute, please answer with the following regarding your hen(s):

BTW Cimarron, this is great to hear. We're still waiting for our three hens to start laying (Barred Rock, Australorp, Ameraucana). Born Sept.21, Seattle, WA. I figure that, your being in Texas, I can expect ours to be a bit behind you. Thanks!

Both BA and BR are laying, not sure which egg belongs to which. One started on 1 March and other about 5 March 09

all started after a 10 warm spell in Atlanta and when daylight was about 11 + hours. (no artificial light in coop)

First eggs - 10/31/08 and 11/1/08
They were eating starter/grower at the time
Began laying less than 10 days after implementing artificial light - not full 14 hours, just from when we got up at 5:15 - slightly less than 12 full hours at Solstice

5. What is feed? - chick start, grow mash, lay mash, various treats
6. Artificial light supplemented? - winter yes, summer no

Okay.... I use a light bulb on my water can to keep it from freezing and it is the only artificial light except for the neighbors parking lot neon light which shines into the coops 18" x 8 foot window.

Feed was Purena Start and grow plus free range, and occasional banana peel.
