Sonya saw Swampson before he saw her. "Dad..!" she breathed, getting to her feet.
Swampson spotted Sonya and started over as quickly as he could. "Sonya, my girl," he said in a surprisingly soft voice. But he paused, watching with some alarm as Sonya burst into tears.
"Daddy!" she sobbed, and she ran over, burying her face in his chest.
"Wh-! I thought ya'd be happy!" he said with some exasperation, though he smiled down at her.
"I-thought-you-were-dead!" came Sonya's muffled voice, each word spoken between sobs.
"It's okay, Sonya. I'm okay," he murmured in response. For a moment, he wrapped his neck around her's in a doggy hug. Then, he backed up a step or two. "Now wipe those tears away and cheer up! I didn't hike all th' way here to see my girl cry!"
Sonya smiled. "Okay, dad," she replied. She cleared her throat and wiped her face with one paw. Then she smiled to her father, tilting her head slightly. "I missed you, dad."
"I missed you, too," said Swampson. He shook his head, a light smile on his maw. "Why don't ya show me 'round this place, then? I want t'a know what life's been like for ya here."
Sonya nodded happily, and the two of them headed into the church den.
