Mystery's eyes opened slightly, and he blinked as if he was just waking up for the day. Then, it hit him--the pups! He scrambled to his paws and looked around quickly. "Oh, Dixie, I'm so sorry! Oh--" His words were cut short as his green gaze fell on Dixie, lying in her nest with three pups at her side. Her pups--their pups... He stared at them for a long while, his face blank, before he looked to Dixie. "C-Can I come over?" He was a nervous wreck at that point. It had really happened! They had a family!

His eyes fell on each pup individually as he stood there, frozen as if he was afraid that the slightest movement would ruin it all. Three pups... He didn't know if he had sons or daughters, but he had three pups. One looked like him, another like Dixie, and the third had features of both. How beautiful they were. Was that right to think? And his eyes moved to Dixie, who in spite of her work that day was just as beautiful as always. He took a step toward her hesitantly, and then another. A calm feeling washed over him as he approached his family, crouching by Dixie's side and pressing his cheek into hers. "I love you," he murmured, before turning his attention to the pups.

They were so small and looked so fragile. Even so, he gathered his courage and leaned toward the litter, blinking with surprise as the little black she-pup with the markings like Dixie's placed her tiny paw on his nose. His heart fluttered. He was in love all over again. And he smiled warmly to his daughter. "Hello, beautiful," he whispered to her, just as he had to Dixie earlier that day.

Names! They needed names! Gently pulling his nose out from under the little pup's paw, he sat there by Dixie. "So what are they? I-I mean, which are boys and which are girls?" He felt so awkward asking that, but shrugged the feeling away, looking lovingly toward Dixie as he did.

Dixie smiled at him as he came over, at first wanting to say of course he could come over. Instead, she whispered, "Meet your new kids." She looked at him with eyes glassy from exhaustion and pain but so filled with love and happiness. It was incredible how Mystery had turned her life around. Her heart leaped when she saw the she-pup with smoky tinted fur place a tiny paw on his nose. She smiled a broad smile, then replied to his question. "The one that looks like both you and me is a boy; the other two are girls."

((Sorry, I had a lot I wanted to get in that post.

(It was a heart touching post! Just the perfect level of father-daughter-mother interactions... It made me smile.)

Mystery sighed contentedly. A son and two daughters... He lay where he had been sitting, his shoulder pressing against Dixie's. "Have you thought of any names?" he asked quietly. He mulled over a few ideas of his own in his mind, but as he looked at the pups, none of them seemed right.

((Mystery's going to name Minty, probably in my next post. ;) ))

Quote: "I've been thinking of names since we first decided to have pups!" Dixie laughed, poking him in the cheek with her cold, wet nose. Touching the black pup with a small, gentle paw, she said, "This one is definitely going to be Raven." Moving her paw to the male pup, her brow furrowed. "I don't know what to name him," she said, finally fessing up that she was confused. "I would like to go by eye color but he hasn't opened his eyes so I guess we'll have to wait," she said. "Unless he has green eyes and we know this for sure," she added. "Is there any way we could see now?" she asked, looking at Mystery in confusion.

Mystery gave her a look of uncertainty. He certainly wouldn't know--he knew less about this whole thing than Dixie did! But he looked down at the pup and tilted his head. "I think... His eyes will be like mine," he said slowly. He wasn't sure how he knew that--it was just a feeling. "And so will hers," he added, smiling at the little unnamed she-pup that had put her paw on his nose. His eyes were green... Different shades of the color moved through his mind, but he rejected them all. His pups needed the perfect names.

And then it hit him, as his eyes fell on his as of yet unnamed daughter. "Minty," he said softly, leaning toward the pup as he did. The word was irrelevant to her at that point, though. Mystery watched as the little pup, all full, let out a squeaky yawn and fell asleep snuggled against her siblings.

Dixie looked at him and nodded. "Yeah, I was thinking so, too," she said softly. She smiled at him as emotions crossed his face. Turning her head to look at the boy pup, she stared down at him as she considered names. Suddenly, she whispered, "Jade," just as Mystery whispered, "Minty." Looking at him in surprise, she said, "What?" Not waiting for an answer, she said, "I'm naming him Jade..." tucking the pup beside her, she leaned her head near his small, silky ear and whispered, "Jade..." As if the pup knew that was his name, those tiny, floppy ears perked up ever-so-slightly and Dixie yelped, "Did you see that?!"
