Sonya woke suddenly, scrambling to her feet and looking around dazedly. Where...? Where was she? Her head was still foggy from the sedative. She blinked until her vision cleared, then looked around, a frightened feeling creeping through her bones. That's right... She was in the... The pound!

She yelped in alarm, backing into one corner of her cage. Her hackles rose instinctively. She was achy. What had the humans done to her? Her breathing quickened.

And then she noticed the old dog sitting outside of her cage. That was the very same one that was grumping at the other dogs before.

"Sonya..."

She lipread what he said, tilting her head and then looking into his eyes. Her head still spun, but she focused... and then she realized who it was.

"Dad!" she gasped, scrambling over.

But Swampson was having mixed feelings, and as Sonya approached, he jumped to his feet and snarled. "You darned fool kid, what are you doin' getting caught by the dogcatcher!" he barked, watching as she hunched down with her ears pinned back. He relaxed, looking to his daughter with his brow furrowed. "Dogs like you, they... They don't ever leave the pound," he said softly, suddenly looking scared, himself.

Sonya sat up, tilting her head at him. "I'll be okay," she replied, feeling a bit braver.

"Yer darned right you'll be okay!" Swampson snapped back. He sighed and shook his head. "I'm gonna have ter break ya out tonight."

Sonya smiled with relief. "Thank you, dad," she replied. "...And my friends?" she added, motioning toward Yuki and the other dogs.

Swampson didn't take a moment to think about it. "No! I can't jeopardize my position here, Sonya." And before she could protest, he turned and walked away.

Sonya looked sadly toward Yuki in the cage beside her. Shaking her head slowly, she let her ears droop and her tail lay limp. "Don't worry, Yuki. I'll find a way to get you out, too," she said to the beta female of her pack. She wasn't sure if she could get them all out, but she had to at least get Yuki out, too.

((I had a lot I needed to get out... :D ))

(Whoa! I didn't know Swampson was Sonya's dad!)

Mutt looked at Sonya with the good half of his face, and he muttered lightly, "Lucky kid, having someone to get her out. I'm gonna die here..."

Sonya, of course, didn't hear Mutt, but she could see the sad look on half of his face from where she sat. She frowned, feeling guilty now. There had to be something she could do, for all of them! She offered Mutt a small smile, hoping he would cheer up.

Mutt saw her smile, and, not wanting to be rude and smother her kind gesture, he nodded and smiled back at her.
