Banner snarled, and sprang at Jargo, snapping his jaws inches from his face.

Jargo stood his ground, stiff-legged, facing Banner. "I'm uninterested in your foolish play." he growled.

(Have you ever read the series of books about a dog who runs away from a farm and joins a pack of dogs in a park like you are describing? I don't remember the name, but how you described the park reminded me of the book.)
