Surviving a Hawk Attack?

Huxlius, how is your chicken doing? I found your thread because I also had a hawk attack this afternoon. My blue frizzle cochin has some puncture wounds, and is unsteady on her feet. Hoping you chook is doing well, and that it will bode well for mine.

Today must have been the day for Hawk attacks. I know I lost 1 Rhode Island Red, the Hawk ripped her neck open. It happened very quickly, our chickens free range on 5 acres. We were outside and went in the house for a few minutes, and my wife decided to go check on them and saw the hawk on top of her. It was too late.

We have another one missing (Golden Comet), she has been gone since about 4 pm, so I have given up hope on her. Looked everywhere for her...nothing. Gonna miss Myrtle!

Hawks may be protected, but I would like to protect my chickens with a little Remington action....

Yeah it's that time of year, migration.

This time two years ago, I was sitting outside with my birds. I always supervise free range time. A hawk flew down into the neighbors yard, below the level of the 6 ft fence. I didn't see it until it flew up and over the fence, and down almost onto a bird. I saw it before the chickens did and I jumped up into a action. My movement startled the birds and scattered them so the hawk missed Lil Bit by a foot. Very scary! Never been that close to a hawk before.

One was circling a couple of days ago, but the local birds were harassing it. I also put a roof of welded wire on top of the run, so I don't need to worry when they're locked up.

Well I was so busy yesterday I did not get to update my earlier post, but Saturday morning I was out loading up the pressure washer and when I came out of my shed, there was Myrtle, staring at me like I was crazy...she was fine and happy to be the only one out free ranging...I picked her up, checked her out no scars marks or tattoos....so the hawk did not get her and apparently she was not up to no good by being out all night. She is doing fine!

Take care!
