... we found her yesterday sitting on 13 eggs!!!!! BF says she has never had eggs this early, but for about a month, I've been feeding her corn kernals and cracked corn, more or less as a bribe so I can pet her. I had never been able to get close enough to her to actually pet her until yesterday, when I came to check her nest for additional deposits. She indulged me a few seconds of petting her, but then decided enough was enough and started pecking at me. I didn't want to tick her off too much, so I left her alone.
I marked 4 eggs and removed the rest, so we'll start collecting her new ones to eat. Yay!!!!
Now, this brings up a couple of questions ... how long after laying are they edible? I know when I removed them they were very warm ... but, they'd been out there from 1 to 10 days.
And .... is there anyway to know if they're possibly fertile. She's our only chicken, we have not seen roosters around, but there is a rooster "next door" which is about an acre or more away. Wouldn't a rooster be sticking around if he found her?
