Suspect internal layer/egg yolk peritonitis: would antibiotics help?

My daughter, Horsefeathers, posted a few days ago about our dear pet hen, Rita. We now suspect she has either:
1) cancer
2) internal laying >>>> perhaps leading to egg yolk peritonitis

From what I gather, there is little we can do in either case, however, if there's ANY chance we can cure her we would like to try. Someone mentioned Baytril... would something like that help? What would the dose be, if we could get some? Can it be oral?

Here's the situation:

1) 3 year old Red Sex Link

2) Grossly swollen abdomen. It is firm and taught, like a large grapefriut. Skin appears red. Does not feel watery, nor can we palpate any hard objects. Also, the tips of her comb are blue-ish purple.

3) In retrospect it has been worsening over several weeks, as I noticed she was gaining weight. She has also not been laying recently, and she used to be very regular. We realized the problem on Saturday when she refused scratch grains (she was always crazy for food before) and then I picked her up and felt the swelling.

5) She is not interested in grains at all, but is eating small amounts of bugs and worms, a bit of yogurt, and is still interested in bread (treat).
6) Poop is very small, and not much of it. Easiest to examine under the roost, where it is a pool of watery yellow liquid with small green (like not-well-digested) solids.

7) On Saturday we gave her two warm-water soaks, and did a tentative digital exam. Felt nothing IN the egg tract/vent, but could feel the swollen mass through the wall of the tube. We also got her to eat a crushed TUMS yesterday and will feed another today (crushed in olive oil spread on a bit of bread).

8 ) We can't bring her to a vet but will try to get any meds that might help her.

9) She has not gotten terribly worse in the last 3 days. She seems a little bit "slower" and is waddling a little more. She has periods when she stands alone with her tail down and eyes squeezed shut with her head trembling...... but then most of the time she is off scratching for bugs with her tail up. Albeit, in a slower and more subdued way than her usual self.

I have a feeling there is not much we can do for her but try to make her happy and comfortable...... however, if there is any therapy (antibiotics??) short of X rays and surgery that anyone thinks might help, PLEASE let us know.

Thank you.
Stacey

I had a bird with internal egg through out her body cavity and to my knowledge there is nothing you can do. Personally I would try antibiotics, that way you know you tried everything.
In my experience, I wish I had culled her to save her the pain.
If it is egg parentnitis, then the antibiotic will not help.

Also, someplace on BYC I posted photos of the necropsy of my bird as a learning tool for folks.

Good luck!

(edited for ps) Even if a vet did surgery, they cannot be saved as the poison and egg has its hiding places and you can never be sure about getting it all.(

At this point, antibiotics cannot hurt, but as large as her abdomen is, it's a long shot. Try it anyway. Just use injectible penicillin at a higher than normal dosage, maybe 1/2-3/4 cc twice a day, alternating breasts.

I emailed the Chicken Doctor, a very helpful guy!!!-- and he said it did sound like she's an internal layer and that there's not too much we can do. He suggested we try to find a tropical fish supply store that has Penicillin Tablets and give her a 250 mg tablet twice per day. How does that sound?

Speckledhen--- where would I find injectable Penicillin? Do you think it's far preferable to the tablets? Is that a Tractor Supply item or would I need a vet scrip do you think?

OK-- I found this locally... Speckled Hen what do you think?

Pen G. 3,000 units per ML. Feed store has 3cc syringes but the smallest needles they have are 22 gauge, 1". is that too big? Could you give me instructions for giving the injection? (I had to do it last year on another chicken and I totally freaked out that I was going to hit a vein and kill her, or puncture her lung or something.... it was horrible...)

Most feedstores have it and they'll have penicillin in the fridge plus needles. You can do the tablets like Doc says, too. We keep syringes and needles and penicillin here for things like this. We use a 22 guage needle and some use a 20 guage. Just go in about 1/8-1/4" into the breast meat, staying away from the keel. Just warm up the penicillin before you use it by leaving it on the counter to come up to about room temp or fill the syringe and leave it on the counter to warm. Give it for no more than five days, alternating breasts.

SpeckledHen, it looks like my two options are the injectable Pen g I described above, OR some "Fish Mox" Amoxycillin tabs I did find locally as well. I emailed Peter brown again to see if Amoxycillin would be OK but have not heard back.... and I feel like I should get this stuff into her pretty soon if I can. So which should I go buy, do you think? Clearly the oral stuff is easier (also cheaper) but will oral Amoxycillin be as effective?

Thanks for your help!

I got the FishMox Amoxycillin and gave her the first dose (on a small piece of bread... she gobbled it right down, good girl!)

At least I feel like we are doing SOMETHING to help. She is still the same as she's been, no change really.

Thanks again for all of your help.

Stacey
