Sussex

Katy - Where did your Speckled Sussex come from? They are very pretty. I ordered chicks from Ideal this year to try the breed, but I'm interested in your source because yours are so good-looking.

I agree they are sweet birds. Mine layed well in her youth. I only have one left of three originals from Ideal 7 years ago. 'Rusty' Talks a lot and does kinda like being picked up. She was a very broody bird, if you value that. I'll be getting more of this breed :)

This is Pita! His tail feathers have since grown in, my frizzle roo always picked his tail when they were babies, but no more since Pita has finally matured! His name stands for Pain In The ***, because he was a fiesty little chick and always tried to escape when you would open the brooder or pen. He is one of my friendliest chickens, and does not act like a roo at all, except to call his hen to come eat the treats I give them. Such a gentleman, letting the ladies eat first. He doesn't like to be caught, but once you pick him up, he doesn't fight at all, which is good, because he is a handful.

Well....my girls are hatchery stock all the way. I wouldn't be surprised if well bred birds lay something better!

Eh, I kinda doubt it. It's my understanding that breeders nowadays are only breeding to the SOP for show and utility has gone by the wayside. Hatcheries, however, are catering to families who actually want eggs for the table.

Here's a few of mine.
