Went to the feed store yesterday to pick up a 40kg bag of starter for my chickens and was limited to 20kg bag instead; at the price I paid for a 40kg bag last month. The taxi I used needed to stop at four gas stations before finding one that actually had gas to sell him at $1.50 a liter (almost $6 a gallon);thankfully, taxis charge by the trip here, and not by the hour (hahaha).

Seriously considering raising rabbits for SHTF meat. I'll be seeking advice on how to feed rabbits should feed stores become unavailable or too expensive.
A bit about my situation: I live on a fully fenced half acre in Panama, near the equator; read that as High 80's to high 90's year round, both day and night, with high humidity, and at least an hour of rain daily for about 8 months of the year. The 'yard' is planted in st. augustine grass (about 1/8 acre) and the other 3/8 acre is in various grasses, banana & papaya, nance fruit (aka hogberry), a mint bush, moringa & mango. I haven't planted guandu (pigeon peas) in the yard, but could easily add that as it grows effortlessly.
I have a small flock of chickens for both eggs & meat, and I am not shy about processing my animals for the dinner table when needed. I wonder if my birds could get by just on the yard if SHTF any harder than it already has.
So then, down to the question... First, do I have enough diversity in the yard to feed rabbits if the menu only included the plants mentioned, and if so, how many breeding rabbits could that effectively sustain? Would that number of rabbits provide me with enough meat to cook one or two rabbits weekly, assuming that those rabbits are about eight weeks of age?

Im not sure about the rabbit thing. But i went into my local store i get feed from and they had one bag of chick starter. And 2 bags of my dogs feed. I hope they figure out feed here soon otherwise i will have to make my own.

I much prefer to feed my animals store-bought, balanced by the professionals, food... but that is very rapidly becoming unavailable and unaffordable. Add to the cost the taxi fare, which doubled since last month due to gasoline prices and difficulty obtaining... and for me, it is a disaster.
I need to quickly come up with a solution to provide meat for my household without breaking the bank.
Speaking of banks. I was limited on how much money I could withdraw from my ATM this week as well. So they're really really tightening the bolts.
I cannot help but to think that someone, somewhere is profiting immensely from this.

It would be good to look into alternate ways to feed your animals. The various problems (expensive fuel, fertilizer, shipping, western US drought, etc) have greatly impacted the grain production this year. We are still using the grain from last year. Starting in September or so, there will likely be additional shocks as grain, meat, fuel (ethanol) and other areas are impacted by the poor harvest.

You might want to read the following thread where we've been discussing alternate ways to feed our birds:
